Limerick celebrating the ascension to power of the right honourable home secretary and equality minister
Great thought's needed limiting what
one can do twixt the grave and the cot
But when talking sexuality
or a partnership's legality
the rule's Teresa "May" - others "may not"
Limerick celebrating the new Government
The future is brave, bright and bold
under Dave and Nick, so we are told
But I’ve a suspicion
that this coalition
Will soon revert to the Tories of old
Mystic Al predicts the Lib Dem's future
So its nearly all over it would seem we are shortly to be under a Con-Lib (Con-Dem?) Government.
Now, I'm not the most politically aware person out there but I am interested and know plenty of others who are too. I will even admit to knowing and even liking several committed tories as well as Greens, socialists, Lib Dems and even the (very) odd person who thinks that UKIP make sense, what I have never met is a Tory who supports meaningful voting reform or a Lib Dem who is going to be happy backing tax cuts for the richest and bringing back fox hunting.
My prediction is that the next Parliament will see: a referendum on and possibly even the adoption of, Alternative Vote, the least meaningful and least likely to rock the boat change currently under discussion. However, come next election the Liberal Democrats will still come a poor third and even lose seats due to the following:
- The Press will crucify them for anything the government does that they (or, to be more prosaic the tabloid's owners) do not like.
- They have seriously pissed of their membership by the compromises they will be making.
- Labour voters will not be easily swayed into voting tactically ever again.
There are, I have no doubt, some people who claim the Lib Dems will be a moderating force on Tory Excesses, halting the cut in inheritance tax or protecting the BBC from Murdoch's vultures (interesting, 'Murdoch' is in my phone's autospell), well we thought that about Tony Blair and his influence on George Bush and that all worked out fine so maybe they are correct.
Still, Nick 'n' Vince might be in the cabinet for a few months, which is nice.
It is times like this I wish I could give a shit about football or some other distraction from the overwhelming underwhelmingness of it all
Sent from my phone, please excuse any typos.Vote for moaning #TYSIC
If you want to self improve, try moaning. If you want to moan, Vote. If anyone you know doesn't vote, then the next time they complain to you about anything you can legitimately ask them to shut up as they have no right to express their opinion :)
Actually, you can ignore the smiley on the end of that
As to how to vote, I leave that to you but this is true, as is this.

Today is 'Charlie Chaplin Day for Democracy' #TYSIC
Make sure you vote:
It is important to vote, if you don't vote, you have no right to complain about anything governmental for the next 5 years and for TYSIC, and enjoying life I need to be able to complain. If that isn't reason enough, if less than 1% more of the population had voted for any other party (even Tory, if you must) in the European elections, the BNP would not have won their seats. Withholding your vote is not a defendable stance, if you want to protest the choice, vote for a minority candidate who is closest to your own ideology, but vote.
From Richard Herring's blog today:
And don't forget everyone, Friday this week is Charlie Chaplin's 121st birthday and the first every "Charlie Chaplin Day for Democracy". I am hoping that some of you might join me and wear a real or false toothbrush moustache for the day (or at least part of it) in order to remind people of the importance of our vote and to help fight fascism and the BNP. I see this very much as an underground movement and there will be no official publicity for it (feel free to plug the idea if you have an outlet to do so). I want to see if we can make this grow organically. It would be great and appropriate if it became a yearly fixture, but it would still be something if it only happened once. If you want to use it as an opportunity to raise money for charity (SCOPE perhaps) then that is up to you, but I would be very grateful if you marked the occasion in some way. Even if that was only by drawing a moustache on a poster or putting one on a statue or whatever you think would help (don't cause damage to anything of any actual value of course). After all these months of being almost the only idiot with this ludicrous face furniture, it would be good to know that a handful of other fools had joined me.
So, for one day only, Al & Spidey go toothbrush:
